Online backup - an ideal solution

Minimum requirements:
- fast internet connection (e.g. adsl2)
- modem/router with ddns and port forwarding support - most standard devices can do that
- two hour on site pc service for setup
- monthly fee (includes storage space and monitoring the backup) - starting at $50 ex GST per month; discounts apply when paying in advance for one year.
Unlike the traditional backup solutions (described below), the backup process is fully automated and the monitoring of the backup is our job!
Depending on the internet speed, the maximum amount that can be transfered over night lies between 1 and 2 GB of data. In other words, if you modify more then 2 GB of data every day, e.g. by video editing, this solution is not for you.
Backup to external hard drives
Minimum requirements:
- 2 external hard drives (one has to be kept offsite all the time and they are going to be rotated)
- backup software (the one included in your operating system - e.g. Timemachine from Apple or Windows Backup from Microsoft - or an alternate open source or commercial software)
- encryption software (if the backup software does not include strong encryption)
- one hour pc service for setup
- monthly one hour service to make sure the backup is running properly and to verify it; an unverified backup is useless.
Unless you are using 3 hard drives and rotate them daily, you will not have an incremental copy of your data offsite every day with this method.
This is a reliable and safe solution, if encryption is well implemented, but it requires your intervention every day for rotating the hard drives and keeping them safe.
